Carved, cast, weighted and felted at the bench. No piece leaves the atelier without a maker's mark and a final inspection by the finisher who shaped it.

Our Story · Since 1994
A European atelier of carvers, casters and finishers who believe a chess set should outlive the player who owns it. This is how we came to that belief — and what we intend to do with it next.
The Brand Story
Three decades on, the workshop still smells of rosewood and beeswax, and every set that leaves it is signed by the hand that finished it.
In 1994 our founder walked out of a fourth dealer's shop empty-handed. He wanted a tournament board with true 0.1 mm square tolerance, an ebony grain that ran unbroken across all sixty-four squares, and a set of weighted pieces that would still stand true after ten thousand games. Nobody made it. So he made it himself, on a single bench, over eleven months.
That first board never went to market — it stayed in the workshop as the standard every piece since has been measured against. What grew around it is an atelier of carvers, turners, casters and finishers, each trained the long way, each holding a veto over any piece that does not meet the bench.
We have never chased volume. A collection is released when it is finished, not when a season demands it. The waiting list is long and we consider that a compliment to the craft rather than a problem to be solved.
Ultimate Chess
Ultimate Chess is a European atelier producing luxury chess sets, boards, pieces and tournament accessories entirely by hand. Every material is chosen for how it will age; every tolerance is set for how the piece will play, not how it will photograph.
Carved, cast, weighted and felted at the bench. No piece leaves the atelier without a maker's mark and a final inspection by the finisher who shaped it.
FIDE-compliant sizing across the tournament range, milled to 0.1 mm square tolerance so a board plays as honestly in year twenty as on day one.
A lifetime warranty and an open workshop door. Send a set back at any age and the atelier that made it will restore it — refelt, refinish, re-weight.
About Ultimate Chess
Mission
Chess deserves objects that reward decades of use. We build to that standard, and price it honestly — no shortcuts hidden beneath the lacquer. Every set is meant to outlast the hands that first opened it.
Vision
From a child's first Staunton to a grandmaster's tournament board — one house, one standard of finish. A great set invites longer games, sharper play, and the confidence of holding a piece made to be held for a lifetime.
Quality
Weight, balance, felt adhesion, grain match and lacquer depth are checked individually — never by batch. A single piece that falls short retires the whole set from sale. We would rather lose the sale than lower the bar.
Craftsmanship
Our artisans train for six years before touching a king. The knights are carved last, and always by name — each one signed by the hand that shaped it. No two are ever truly identical, and we count that among a set's quiet virtues.
Heritage
Since 1994 we have supplied clubs, championships and collectors across seventy-two countries — from quiet Sunday tournaments to boards that decided national titles. Those thirty years live in every set we make today.
The Game
Chess is the rare contest with no hidden cards and no favourable roll. Both players see everything, and the board still yields more possible games than there are atoms in the observable universe. Everything that happens is authored by the two people sitting at it.
That is why the object matters. A board with a warp, a knight that will not stand true, a square that catches the eye wrongly — each one is a small tax on concentration, paid over hours. Our work is to remove that tax entirely, so nothing between the two players competes for their attention except the position.
Our Mission
We exist to put an object of genuine craft on the table of every serious player — one made from honest materials, held to tournament tolerances, and finished to a standard that rewards a lifetime of use rather than a first impression.
That commits us to slower production, to materials we can trace, to a warranty with no expiry, and to a workshop that will still be here to restore a set thirty years after it was sold.
Our Vision
We want the phrase “my grandfather's set” to mean something again — an heirloom still played on, still true, still worth the space it takes on the shelf. An atelier measured not by how much it sold this year, but by how much of its work is still in play a century from now.
